MOUNT KILIMANJARO CHARITY TREK
11TH - 19TH JULY 2010

Made are delighted to announce that from 11th-19th July 2010 the Made team will be leading a group of intrepid trekkers in a monumental challenge to try and conquer the dizzy heights of Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Made Africa.

Our fearless team will face 6 days of gruelling 8 hour walks, temperatures as low as -25°C, blisters and unfortunately for some altitude sickness. Climbing Kilimanjaro is going to incredibly demanding both physically and mentally but the decision to take on this challenge of a lifetime was an easy one for our trekkers because as you’ll see below, the money raised from the trek is going to a wonderful cause – Bidii School and the children of Kibera.

Kibera is probably the largest slum in Africa, occupying 630 acres of land with up to a million residents. Overcrowinding in housing is so extreme that parts of Kibera average only 12 square feet of housing per person or the equivelent of floor space. There is no running water to most homes in Kibera and to obtain water, residents must pay 2 to10 times what is paid by a Nairobi resident outside the slums. However, the most distressing fact of Kibera is that there are more than 100,000 orphaned children, most of which have lost their parents to Aids. Bidii school provides an achor for these children, a refuge where they can blossom and learn in order to lead a life with choices.

Proceeds from the trek will help Bidii school in the following:

  • A complete re-build/refurbishment of the school creating two class rooms allowing the children to be taught in two separate groups - infants and juniors. The school has already doubled in size.
  • All children attending are given vaccinations and multi-vitamins due to poor diets and hygiene in Kibera, this action has helped to build their immune system.
  • Hot meals are provided while the children are at school.
  • All stationary including reading books, text books, pencils and colouring pens.
  • Financial support to maintain School rent payments, water bills and teacher salaries.

Made Africa needs your help to maintain its goal of creating a sustainable future for the children of Kibera. The ongoing commitment to Bidii is extremely challenging but together we can make a difference.
