CASE STUDY: BIDII SCHOOL - KIBERA, NAIROBI
Bidii School is situated in probably the largest slum in Africa. Kibera is located southwest of Nairobi city centre and is near double the size of London's Hyde Park. It is home to over 1.2 million people - mainly settlers from outside coming to Nairobi in search of work to support their families. Their homes are in the main made from corrugated iron and in the main have no plumbing, very poor sanitation and no electricity.
Kibera is featured in Fernando Meirelles's film The Constant Gardener, which is based on the book of the same name by John le Carré.
Bidii School was started by a couple of volunteer teachers to help the children living in Kibera. Till recently the school, which has 120 children attending aged between 1 and 7 years old, operated from a single room - approx. 400 sq feet. The majority of the children are orphans or come from zero income families. As you can imagine the space is very cramped and trying to teach so many children of different age groups at the same time was near to impossible.
Since 2009 Made Africa has made a long term commitment to Bidii School by providing the following support:-
The ongoing commitment to Bidii is very challenging. Made Africa needs your help to maintain its goal of creating a sustainable future for some of Kibera's children.
